Google has officially opened a new datacenter in Stockholm, marking a significant expansion of their cloud infrastructure in the Nordics. For those of us based in Sweden working with cloud-native tech, this is great news — lower latency, improved data residency options, and a stronger case for running workloads closer to home.
Stockholm has been positioning itself as a hub for sustainable datacenters for a while now, thanks to the cool climate, renewable energy grid, and solid connectivity. It makes sense that Google would plant a flag here alongside the likes of AWS and Azure, who already have regions in the area.
For developers and companies in the region, this opens up a lot of possibilities. Google Cloud services with a local region means less friction around compliance, better performance for end users in Scandinavia and the Baltics, and more options when designing multi-region architectures.
Exciting times for me in other words!
